Our research, authored by Dr. Onowa McIvor, Dr. Kari Chew, and Kanen’tó:kon Hemlock, offers a comprehensive analysis of the legislation, regulations, and policies aimed at supporting the revitalization of Indigenous languages in Canada and other international jurisdictions. Our report provides a comparative study of the measures in place at the federal, provincial, and territorial levels in Canada, as well as examples from other countries.
A primary objective is to centralize information on Indigenous language revitalization efforts and draw comparisons among the various legislative and policy frameworks. Additionally, our report serves as a resource for advocating the full implementation of the Indigenous Languages Act in Canada and for influencing provincial and territorial legislation, policies, and regulations that impact Indigenous language revitalization.
This report is a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and advocates working in the field of Indigenous language revitalization, offering insights into the current landscape of legislation, regulations, and policies, as well as highlighting areas for potential improvement and development.
